In Central Texas, Primarily Primates, Inc. operates a sanctuary dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating primates that have been used in laboratories, the entertainment industry, or kept as exotic pets. The organization cares for over 300 animals, providing not only physical rehabilitation but also enrichment activities designed to help the primates rediscover natural behaviors.
During this year’s SXSW event, UPLIFT Desk staff met representatives from Primarily Primates and learned about the challenges of running such a facility. According to the team at Primarily Primates, “running a sanctuary for over 300 animals is a full-time job, demanding compassionate care, physical rehabilitation, and enrichment to reignite wild behaviors.”
The discussion led UPLIFT Desk to support the sanctuary by donating new chairs and desks through their donation program. “We love to support local, mission-driven organizations run by people who pour their hearts into making a difference and we wanted to do what we could for their staff,” stated UPLIFT Desk.
Primarily Primates also raises funds by selling paintings created by some of its residents. One chimpanzee named Baxter was highlighted during SXSW; his life story includes being born in a research lab, leased for television work where he performed tricks, and eventually rescued by the sanctuary. The sale of his artwork helps fund his ongoing care.
UPLIFT Desk described its philanthropic approach: “For us, philanthropy is woven into our company DNA, especially when it supports neighbors doing incredible work right here in Texas.” The partnership between UPLIFT Desk and Primarily Primates began at SXSW and has since grown into an ongoing relationship.
Currently, Primarily Primates is constructing a new enclosure for four recently arrived chimpanzees. This expansion will provide additional space for all 31 chimpanzees at the facility and allow flexibility during maintenance on other enclosures.
The public is encouraged to learn more about the mission of Primarily Primates and how they can contribute to supporting rescued animals in Central Texas.
