The Texas Department of State Health Services announced on Apr. 2 that people should not eat Great Value dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets with a best by date of Feb. 10, 2027. The warning applies to the product sold in 29-ounce bags and distributed through Walmart stores nationwide, following concerns about possible lead contamination.
Officials said routine public health sampling detected a high level of lead in the affected chicken nuggets. Lead exposure is especially dangerous for children under six years old and for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. The department noted that there is no safe level of lead in food.
The department confirmed that packages matching the best buy date “FEB 10 2027,” lot code “0416DPO1215,” and establishment number “P44164” have been removed from store shelves, but consumers may still have them at home. “People who still have bags of these chicken nuggets should not eat them and should either throw them away or return them to the store where they were purchased,” the agency said.
Photos showing what the packaging looks like are available from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Texans interested in staying informed about food recalls and alerts can visit resources provided by state agencies.
The department stressed that protecting vulnerable groups from potential lead exposure remains a priority as investigations continue.
