Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced that the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) has received federal approval to extend the application period for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients seeking replacement benefits. This extension follows the January winter storm that caused significant food losses across the state.

“Thanks to our partners in the White House, Texans affected by the recent winter storm have more time to apply for SNAP benefits to replace any food they lost,” said Governor Abbott. “By extending the replacement benefit deadline, Texans are better equipped to feed their families and recover from the effects of the freezing weather. I thank Texas Health and Human Services Commission and the Trump administration for their unwavering support of Texas families.”

HHS Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth also commented on the impact of the storm: “The winter storm and power outages left many communities in difficult situations. We are thankful that we can offer this support to families who are still recovering from the storms.”

SNAP recipients now have until February 23, 2026, to apply for replacement benefits. Once a request is submitted, funds should be added to Lone Star Cards within two business days.

To request a benefit replacement, SNAP recipients must visit a local HHSC office. Locations can be found by visiting YourTexasBenefits.com and clicking “Find an Office” at the bottom of the page.

For additional disaster assistance information, Texans can visit HHSC’s Receiving Disaster Assistance webpage or dial 2-1-1 and select option 1 for local resources such as food or shelter.
