The Texas Department of Transportation’s San Angelo District has been recognized for its efforts to use recycled tires in road construction. In recent projects, the district repurposed 135,389 old tires into pavement materials. This initiative helped keep thousands of tires out of local landfills and contributed to more durable roadways.

TxDOT is working with industry partners across Texas to include recycled and environmentally responsible materials in construction and maintenance work whenever possible. The Environmental Achievement Award acknowledges these partnerships and their positive impact on communities.

“By repurposing materials typically discarded in a landfill, we’re enhancing the durability and performance of our roads while also safeguarding the environment,” said TxDOT San Angelo District Engineer Chris Cowen.

The agency says it remains focused on practical, sustainable solutions as it maintains and improves transportation systems in Texas.

Nationally, similar efforts are underway to modernize transportation infrastructure. For example, more than $2.2 billion from the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program has been allocated by the Biden-Harris Administration to support projects that make roads, bridges, transit, rail, ports, and intermodal transportation safer and more sustainable across urban and rural areas. This funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and aims to help move forward important infrastructure projects throughout the country. More details about this initiative can be found at https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/biden-harris-administration-announces-funding-166-projects-modernize-transportation.

Additionally, new guidance along with $7.3 billion in formula funding was announced by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration to assist states and communities in preparing for extreme weather events such as wildfires or flooding. This is also part of broader federal efforts under President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law aimed at strengthening resilience in transportation systems nationwide. As agencies like TxDOT continue to adopt sustainable practices locally, these initiatives align with larger national trends toward modernizing infrastructure while considering environmental impacts.
