Dr. Elyse Portillo, a Pediatric Emergency Medicine Physician at Texas Children’s Hospital, spoke with Univision Houston about how families can protect children during the expected Arctic front this weekend.

Portillo outlined key risks associated with severe winter weather, emphasizing that low temperatures can pose health threats to children if precautions are not taken. She discussed ways to keep children warm and prevent cold-related illnesses or injuries during the storm.

She explained, “The most important thing is to keep children indoors as much as possible, dress them in layers, and make sure they stay dry.” She added that parents should watch for signs of hypothermia and frostbite and avoid letting children play outside for extended periods.

Texas Children’s Hospital has urged families to prepare in advance by ensuring access to necessary medications and having emergency supplies on hand. Portillo also noted that community resources are available for those who need help staying safe during extreme weather.

For more information about safety measures and updates related to winter storms in Houston, residents are encouraged to follow local news sources and public health advisories.
