Texas Children’s Hospital West is marking its 15th anniversary as the first pediatric hospital in Houston’s Energy Corridor. Since opening in 2011, the facility has provided care to more than five million patients from West Houston and nearby communities.

The hospital was the first in the Southwest region to establish a Special Isolation Unit designed for children with highly contagious diseases, treating its first COVID-19 patient there. Each year, Texas Children’s Hospital West sees over 50,000 emergency department visits and offers a range of pediatric subspecialties such as cardiology, oncology, neurology, orthopedics, and surgical services.

“For 15 years, Texas Children’s Hospital West has demonstrated our commitment to bringing exceptional pediatric care closer to home for the patients and families we serve,” said Dr. Debra F. Sukin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Texas Children’s. “We are constantly evaluating how we elevate and expand our pediatric subspecialized care to the growing population of west Houston and its surrounding Harris, Fort Bend, and Waller Counties. We are proud of the extraordinary team leading this campus and providing access to life saving care.”

One former patient is Katherine Go, who began receiving treatment at age 12 for a genetic condition shortly after the hospital opened. Now 27 years old, she credits the facility with giving her access to advanced specialty care close to home. “I grew up with Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus,” said Katherine Go. “Starting my care there as a young girl gave me access to an incredible team who supported me every step of the way. Receiving that level of care in our own community meant everything to my family and me, and we are deeply grateful for all that Texas Children’s has provided over the years.”

The hospital’s milestones include activating a helipad in 2016 for rapid air transport by Texas Children’s Kangaroo Crew; performing its first ECMO cases—an advanced form of life support—and launching urgent care services in 2018; expanding its Sleep Center in 2019 into one of the largest dedicated facilities for children nationally; and opening a multidisciplinary Pain Clinic in 2021.

“Fifteen years ago, we opened Texas Children’s West with a vision to bring outstanding pediatric care closer to families on the west side of Houston,” said Dr. Ketrese White, President of Texas Children’s Hospital West and Woodlands. “It is thanks to the more than 1,300 of our dedicated physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers whose unwavering commitment has made this hospital a trusted place of healing and hope for generations of children.”

Looking forward, leadership says Texas Children’s Hospital West will continue investing in technology and expanding specialized services while serving as a healthcare provider for families throughout Greater Houston.

Texas Children’s is affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine. The organization includes several hospitals across Greater Houston focused on pediatric and women’s health needs as well as research institutes such as Duncan NRI and Feigin Tower.
