Dr. Eric Higginbotham, a pediatric emergency medicine physician at Texas Children’s Austin, provided guidance for families on how to stay safe and warm during the winter storm affecting Texas. He addressed key safety measures for children and families as temperatures drop across the region.
“Keeping your family safe during winter weather is crucial,” said Dr. Higginbotham. “Make sure children are dressed in layers, limit time outdoors, and watch for signs of hypothermia or frostbite.”
He emphasized that parents should be vigilant about the risks posed by cold weather, particularly for young children who may not recognize early symptoms of cold-related illnesses. Dr. Higginbotham advised keeping homes adequately heated and ensuring that smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functioning properly.
He also noted the importance of checking on neighbors, especially those who are elderly or have special needs, to ensure their safety during severe weather conditions.
