Texas Children’s doctor shares journey from childhood cancer patient to mentor

Dr. Elyse Portillo, who works at the Emergency Center at Texas Children’s Hospital, was recently featured on Telemundo. She discussed her personal experience of being diagnosed with retinoblastoma as a toddler and losing an eye because of the disease. Dr. Portillo now mentors a young girl who also had retinoblastoma at an early age.

The mother of the patient expressed gratitude for Dr. Portillo’s support, saying that Dr. Portillo is an inspiration and that her daughter can accomplish anything.
