TCEQ approves over $1.7 million in penalties for environmental violations

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has approved fines totaling $1,751,893 against 22 regulated entities for violations of state environmental regulations. The commission issued agreed orders across several enforcement categories, including four for air quality, two for industrial wastewater discharge, two for multi-media violations, eight for municipal wastewater discharge, and five involving public water systems. Additionally, a default order was issued in one petroleum storage tank case.

On January 13, 2026, the executive director also approved penalties amounting to $157,838 against 49 entities.

The Texas Department of Environmental Quality is responsible for protecting the state’s air, water and land resources while supporting sustainable development through regulatory enforcement statewide. The agency operates from its Austin headquarters with approximately 2,800 employees distributed among 16 regional offices across Texas (official website). It enforces state regulations covering areas such as air emissions, water pollution control and waste management.

The department formed in 1993 by merging previous environmental agencies (official website), and conducts its main operations at its Austin central office located at Park 35 Circle (official website).
