The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has approved penalties amounting to $1,396,137 against 43 regulated entities for violations of state environmental regulations. The enforcement actions include agreed orders across several categories: nine related to air quality, one to industrial hazardous waste, four to industrial wastewater discharges, three multi-media cases, one involving municipal solid waste, ten municipal wastewater discharges, nine petroleum storage tanks, three public water systems, one sludge case, one water quality case, and one concerning water rights.
In addition to these measures, the executive director approved penalties totaling $279,423 against 88 entities on November 25, December 2, and December 16.
The TCEQ enforces regulations in areas such as air emissions control, water pollution prevention, waste disposal management and petroleum storage oversight throughout Texas. Its operations are managed from its Austin headquarters and supported by 16 regional offices located statewide for comprehensive environmental oversight. The agency employs approximately 2,800 staff members who work in various divisions including compliance and enforcement as well as those focused on air quality, water standards and waste management. As the authorized state agency responsible for regulating environmental matters in Texas since its formation in 1993 through a merger of previous agencies, TCEQ’s mission is to protect public health by safeguarding air quality and managing natural resources.
