IAM Wood Pulp & Paper Council raises over $20K with virtual BBQ for guide dog charity

The IAM Wood Pulp & Paper Council (WPPC) held its annual Chillin’ & Grillin’ for GDA event as a virtual barbecue competition, raising more than $20,000 for Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines (GDA | TLC). The online format brought together 20 cooks and teams who competed in categories such as pork ribs and cook’s choice dishes. The event aimed to raise funds to provide guide dogs and service dogs to those in need.

“Our cooks, sponsors, donors, and judges made this event a true success,” said IAM Wood, Pulp and Paper Council President Matt Murdaugh. “The passion and generosity that make this tradition so meaningful.”

Nina Flack was named Grand Champion of the competition. Other winners included Matt Murdaugh in second place, Don Barker in third place, Dave Lehive as Pork Rib Champion, and Brandon Bryant as Cook’s Choice Champion. Best of Territory awards went to Nina Flack (Southern), Brandon Bryant (Western), Andrew Peltier (Midwest), and James Little (Headquarters).

Sponsorship played a significant role in the fundraiser’s outcome. International President Brian Bryant contributed as the $5,000 Title Sponsor. Additional support at the $1,500 level came from the IAM Wood, Pulp and Paper Council, IAM District W2021, IAM District W24, IAM Air Transport Territory, Employee Benefit Systems, and the IAM Southern Territory. Prime Sponsors, Select Sponsors, and other donors also contributed.

Judges for the competition included Yvette Sheehan and LJ Brown from GDA | TLC as well as Laura Ewan from the IAM Legal Department.

All 33 raffle participants received prizes such as cutting boards, watches, GDA | TLC merchandise, and Union Sportsmen’s Alliance items.
