The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) has called on the U.S. Senate to approve the Protect America’s Workforce Act, legislation designed to restore collective bargaining rights for federal employees.
IAM International President Brian Bryant addressed both chambers of Congress in letters urging support for the bill, known as H.R. 2550. “IAM International President Brian Bryant sent this letterto members of the U.S. House of Representatives and this letterto members of the Senate, urging their support for the Protect America’s Workforce Act (H.R. 2550), a bipartisan piece of legislation aimed at restoring collective bargaining rights of federal workers.”
The IAM’s statement follows an executive order issued by former President Donald Trump on March 27, which ended collective bargaining for federal unions. The union characterized this action as an attack on civil servants and their workplace rights.
Introduced in the House by Representatives Jared Golden (D-ME) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), the Protect America’s Workforce Act has drawn bipartisan backing.
“IAM Union strongly supports the Protect America’s Workforce Act for restoring collective bargaining rights to the nation’s federal workforce.”
The IAM emphasized that federal workers are essential to public service and should have access to collective bargaining protections. According to the union, such protections contribute to better working conditions and improved public service.
“IAM Union is a diverse labor union representing thousands of federal workers, including those represented by the National Federation of Federal Employees (NFFE-IAM), an affiliate representing approximately 110,000 federal workers across the U.S.”
The IAM is urging supporters to contact their congressional representatives regarding this legislation.
