The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union announced on March 26 the passing of Mary Allen Fones, a long-serving kitchen supervisor at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center. Fones died on March 15 at the age of 76.
Fones was known for her decades-long commitment to the Winpisinger Center, where she worked for 33 years in various roles before retiring in 2013. Her contributions were valued not only for her dedication to her work but also for the positive atmosphere she fostered among staff and members.
She began her career at the center as a cook, later advancing to kitchen leadperson, and ultimately serving as kitchen supervisor from 1995 until retirement. She was one of the first three employees hired at the center by former IAM International President William W. Winpisinger.
“Mary’s impact on the Winpinsinger Center is measured by all the laughs and smiles she gave our members and staff over her career,” said IAM Union International President Brian Bryant. “She touched so many of our members’ lives with her lovable personality and cooking skills. Our union is better off for her many years of dedication and we send our deepest condolences to Mary’s loved ones.”
Fones was remembered by colleagues as someone who brought humor into daily life, making even busy shifts feel lighter through joking and teasing that built lifelong friendships among coworkers. Outside work, she enjoyed cooking for family gatherings, trying new foods—especially nachos—and supporting community events in Hollywood, Maryland.
The union stated that flowers or memorial contributions may be made to the Patuxent Moose Lodge in honor of Fones.
