Representatives from the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) recently gathered at the William W. Winpisinger Education and Technology Center to prepare for contract negotiations with GE Appliances. The Joint Bargaining Committee (JBC), which also includes members from UA and UE, represents unionized service technicians who work nationwide out of service vans.

The negotiation preparation program involved several days of training, research analysis, and coordinated bargaining exercises. The goal was to ensure that all unions in the JBC approach upcoming talks with GE Appliances as a united front, equipped with information and strategies aimed at securing favorable contracts for their members.

Committee members reviewed contract language, developed proposals, conducted costing exercises, and planned communications. The program placed significant emphasis on engaging union members so that bargaining priorities would reflect concerns from those working on the shop floor.

Committees collaborated across different locals to address shared challenges and exchange best practices. Their focus included protecting wages and benefits, enhancing job security, and improving workplace protections through coordinated bargaining efforts.

“This training gives our negotiating committees the tools and confidence they need to fight for the best possible agreement,” said IAM Union Collective Bargaining Director Craig Norman. “Preparation is power, and when we walk into negotiations, we do so with a clear strategy and the full strength of our membership behind us.”
