The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) New Mexico State Council convened in Ruidoso, New Mexico, bringing together union members from across the state for a weekend focused on organizing, legislative action, and internal communication. The event aimed to enhance the union’s influence in workplaces and communities throughout New Mexico.

John Dyrcz, President of the IAM New Mexico State Council and member of Local 794, opened the meeting by emphasizing unity and collaboration within the labor movement. He addressed delegates on the need for ongoing commitment to strengthen organizing efforts.

During the opening session, IAM General Secretary-Treasurer Dora Cervantes provided a “State of Our Union” update. Cervantes discussed the union’s recent growth, contract achievements, and national campaigns for workers’ rights. “Our state council meeting went great,” said NMSC President John Dyrcz. “Over the past two days, we laid down a strong foundation for the 2026 election cycle and updated our bylaws to make sure we have solid ground for picking labor-friendly candidates and next year’s elections. I want to see continued participation, and I hope some new individuals will volunteer to give their time and talents to state council leadership. My message for our delegates is to stay engaged, activate, agitate, and organize.”

Robert “Bobby” Martinez, General Vice President for IAM’s Western Territory, spoke about challenges facing federal employees and contract workers in the region. He highlighted IAM’s efforts in advocating for fair pay, benefits, and workplace protections.

Richie Johnsen, General Vice President of IAM Air Transport Territory, urged members to support air transport initiatives. He pointed out that successes in one area can benefit all parts of the organization.

Josh Hartford, Special Assistant to the IAM International President for the Rail Division, acknowledged Local 331’s first-time participation at the meeting. He presented an overview of current issues in the rail industry and described how IAM is ensuring its members have a strong voice in that sector.

Additional speakers included Loren Almeroth, Assistant Legislative and Political Director; DeLane Adams, Assistant Communications Director; as well as other officers from various locals.

Throughout the weekend, delegates discussed strategies for leadership development and political advocacy with an eye toward strengthening relationships with labor-friendly elected officials ahead of upcoming elections.

The current officers of NMSC are: President John Dyrcz (Local 794), First Vice President Art Pardo (Local 2515), Second Vice President Virgil Thompson (Local 794), Secretary Treasurer Tina Davis (Local 794), Trustee Lynnelle Jimenez (Local 1635), Trustee Bud Duryea (Local 2515), and Trustee Ron More (Local 2515).

Delegates concluded the gathering with renewed determination to build union power across New Mexico through solidarity and collective action.
