IAM District 6 members have increased their involvement in supporting homeless veterans in Des Moines by making the Stand Down event an official part of their District HELPS initiative for 2025. This year, IAM Locals throughout the district contributed funds, which were matched by District 6, resulting in a total of $1,150 raised. In addition to financial support, donated supplies were provided to aid those in need. According to organizers, $750 is enough to provide approximately 500 meals.

Thirteen members from three different IAM Locals volunteered at the event, with some traveling over three hours to participate. Their responsibilities included registration, food service, security, cleanup, and water delivery for the hundreds of volunteers present at the site. The event served more than 500 people—about half of whom were veterans and half civilians.

“Our veterans deserve more than gratitude, they deserve action,” said IAM Midwest Territory General Vice President Sam Cicinelli. “I’m proud of the IAM members in District 6 who stepped up to honor their service by ensuring they and their families receive the support they need.”

District 6 has encouraged other IAM Districts and Locals to support Homeless Veterans Stand Down events within their own communities. The organization notes that volunteers are always needed and that such efforts have a significant impact on those receiving assistance.
