Texas Governor Greg Abbott has renewed the disaster proclamation related to border security, originally issued on May 31, 2021. The proclamation certifies that the continued surge of individuals unlawfully crossing the Texas-Mexico border presents an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster for several Texas counties and state agencies.
The governor previously amended this proclamation multiple times to update the list of affected counties. According to Abbott, “the certified conditions continue to exist and pose an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster as set forth in the prior proclamations.”
With this renewal, a state of disaster is declared for more than 60 counties including Aransas, Brewster, Cameron, El Paso, Hidalgo, Maverick, Starr, Webb, Zapata, Zavala Counties among others. All orders and authorizations from the original May 31, 2021 proclamation remain in effect.
“In accordance with the authority vested in me by Section 418.014 of the Texas Government Code,” Abbott stated in his declaration renewing the proclamation.
The renewed order requires copies to be filed with relevant authorities as required by law.
The document was signed by Governor Greg Abbott on January 17, 2026 and attested by Secretary of State Jane Nelson.
