Governor Greg Abbott has instructed Texas state agencies to begin investigations into possible fraud in child care funding programs across the state. In a letter sent today, Abbott called for action after reports from the Trump Administration and independent journalists highlighted potential widespread fraud in subsidized child care systems in other states.

“Recently, the Trump Administration and independent journalists have uncovered potential systematic fraud in subsidized child care systems in states like Minnesota,” said Governor Abbott. “Such fraud will never be tolerated in Texas. Today, I directed Texas state agencies to take proactive steps to prevent, detect, and eliminate misuse of taxpayer funds to protect the integrity of Texas’ Child Care Services Program.”

The governor’s directive instructs the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) to work with the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) on strengthening anti-fraud efforts and conducting investigations into any suspected improper use or diversion of taxpayer money within child care services.

The Office of Texas Governor Greg Abbott is part of the executive branch of state government and oversees initiatives related to economic development, education, border security, and community programs according to its official website. Since his election in 2014, Governor Abbott’s administration has supported statewide job growth, record employment levels, and recognized efforts such as Operation Lone Star for border security as well as measures addressing child sex trafficking prevention (source).

Governor Abbott emphasized that safeguarding public funds is a priority for his administration. The Office maintains its main offices at the State Insurance Building in Austin (source).
