Governor Greg Abbott has instructed the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to enforce federal and state roadway safety rules across counties and cities in Texas. The directive aims to ensure that all local governments comply with existing guidelines concerning the use of markings, signs, and signals on public roads.

“Texans expect their taxpayer dollars to be used wisely, not advance political agendas on Texas roadways,” said Governor Abbott. “Today, I directed the Texas Department of Transportation to ensure Texas counties and cities remove any and all political ideologies from our streets. To keep Texans moving safely and free from distraction, we must maintain a safe and consistent transportation network across Texas. Any city that refuses to comply with the federal road standards will face consequences including the withholding or denial of state and federal road funding and suspension of agreements with TxDOT.”

According to current regulations, only standard surface markings, signage, and signals that directly support traffic control or safety are allowed on Texas roads. This means symbols, flags, or other markings that convey social, political, or ideological messages are not permitted.

The Governor’s action underscores the state’s position that local governments must follow established roadway standards or risk losing access to state and federal funding for transportation projects.
