Governor Greg Abbott met with U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon to review legislative achievements from the 89th session related to education in Texas. The meeting focused on recent measures intended to benefit parents, students, and educators throughout the state.
During their discussion, Governor Abbott emphasized actions taken by Texas to advance its education system. He pointed out increased opportunities for parents, students, and educators as a result of new initiatives. “Texas parents, students, and educators now have more opportunities to reach their full potential,” said Governor Abbott.
The Governor also referenced substantial financial commitments made during the session. These include $8.5 billion in additional funding for public schools and $3.5 billion allocated for teacher salary increases. According to Governor Abbott, these investments are aimed at supporting both students and teachers across Texas.
Another point discussed was the implementation of a new school choice program described by Governor Abbott as “the nation’s largest day-one school choice program.” He stated this law is designed “to empower Texas families to choose the education pathway that is best for their child.”
Secretary McMahon’s visit included a tour of Alpha School’s Austin campus where she spoke with graduates currently enrolled in college programs. She commented on innovative uses of artificial intelligence in Texas schools, noting that AI tools are being used “to assist students in learning how to ask the right questions to better understand educational materials.”
