Governor Greg Abbott announced on Mar. 26 that more than $26 million in grant funding will be distributed to support infrastructure projects in Texas military communities through the Texas Military Preparedness Commission’s Defense Economic Adjustment Assistance Grant program.
The funding aims to improve military facilities and protect jobs in areas that could be affected by future Base Realignment and Closure decisions or other basing changes. These grants are intended to keep Texas installations equipped with modern technology, enhancing both safety and operational resiliency for service members and their families.
“Texas is home to over 1.7 million veterans and active duty, reserve personnel, and their families,” Abbott said. “These funds will help ensure Texas military facilities, including our 15 major military installations, are up-to-date with the latest technology to enhance the safety and well-being of Texans and Americans by increasing water access and equipment resiliency. I thank the Texas Military Preparedness Commission for their continued service in supporting our servicemembers so that we can best prepare our state to defend its critical infrastructure.”
Entities receiving fiscal year 2026-2027 reimbursements include the Ark-Tex Council of Governments for Red River Army Depot upgrades; Bell County for aquifer storage at Fort Hood; City of El Paso for expanding water production at Fort Bliss; Val Verde County for airfield lighting modernization at Laughlin Air Force Base; City of Corpus Christi for wastewater pipe replacement at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi as well as atmospheric water generation units at Corpus Christi Army Depot; and City of San Antonio partnering on renovations at JBSA-Fort Sam Houston.
Since 2015, Abbott has awarded over $172 million through this grant program. The Texas Military Preparedness Commission advises state leaders on defense issues with a goal to preserve, expand, or attract new missions while encouraging defense-related businesses to move or grow within the state.
