Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $10.9 million in Fund for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 37 organizations in North Texas and the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The funding, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), is expected to provide services to over 4,500 veterans and their families across 32 counties.
“Texas is grateful for the brave men and women who selflessly served our country in the greatest military in the world,” said Governor Abbott. “The more than $10.9 million in grant funding will provide significant support and services to our veterans and their families in North Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth, including clinical counseling, service dog programs, and financial assistance. Texas will always support those who bravely put their lives on the line to defend our nation and our freedom.”
“I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said TVC Commission Secretary and Marine veteran Chuck Wright. “Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in the lives of those who served. The North Texas and DFW area has a strong military community, and it is home to many veterans. It’s great seeing the community give back to those who served.”
Secretary Wright presented these grants at an event held at the Denton County Courthouse in Denton.
The FVA grants cover a range of services including clinical counseling, peer support, service dog programs, skill-based training, homeless veteran support, housing assistance through Housing for Texas Heroes initiatives, treatment courts specifically designed for veterans, financial aid programs, art therapy sessions, small business support for veterans, meals delivery services targeting veteran households, equine-assisted therapy programs such as S.T.E.P.S. With Horses or Jake E’s Riding Round Up, legal referral services provided by United Way chapters of Denton or Tarrant Counties as well as other general family supports.
Among recent developments statewide: In May this year Governor Abbott announced a record total of $46.3 million distributed through over 200 grants benefiting 175 organizations throughout Texas—an initiative projected to directly serve nearly 40,000 veterans along with their dependents or surviving spouses.
Since its inception in 2009 up through the current grant cycle covering 2025-2026 awards period more than $359 million has been distributed via over 1,600 FVA grants across Texas.
Funding for these programs comes mainly from proceeds generated by specific games offered by the Texas Lottery designated for veteran causes; additional donations can be made during vehicle registration or when obtaining hunting/fishing licenses.
The TVC awards these grants under five categories: General Assistance; Housing for Texas Heroes; Veterans Mental Health Grants; Veterans Treatment Courts; Veteran County Service Officers. Services supported include emergency financial help as well as transportation options for appointments or work-related needs; legal aid access; home modification projects like ramps or accessibility upgrades; rental/mortgage assistance; family outreach activities.
