DC Comics has entered into a yearlong partnership with Guide Dogs of America | Tender Loving Canines (GDA | TLC), the charity supported by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM Union). The collaboration aims to raise awareness about the impact of trained service dogs on individuals who are blind or visually impaired, veterans living with PTSD or traumatic brain injuries, children with autism, and public institutions that benefit from facility dogs.
This new initiative follows last year’s joint effort at San Diego Comic-Con. As part of the partnership, DC Comics is sponsoring a litter of guide and service dog puppies. In an unusual move for GDA | TLC, these puppies have been named after well-known DC characters: Krypto, Clark, Lois, Kara, and Lobo.
According to the announcement, “Krypto – Inspired by Superman’s loyal Superdog, where good dogs and great heroes meet,” while “Clark – Mild-mannered, kind-hearted, and guided by strong morals.” Other names include “Lois – Smart, fearless, and always determined,” “Kara – Powerful, courageous, and learning to harness incredible abilities,” and “Lobo – Bold, fearless, and unforgettable.”
After completing their initial training in puppy pre-kindergarten classes, these dogs will continue developing their skills with volunteer puppy raisers. They are expected to eventually provide independence and companionship to those in need.
Throughout the year-long program, supporters can follow updates on the puppies’ progress through events and social media content focused on community engagement. The public will also have an opportunity to meet the puppies at this summer’s San Diego Comic-Con.
