The U.S. Census Bureau has announced that embargo subscribers will receive access to the 2020-2024 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates starting January 27 at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. The public release of these statistics is scheduled for January 29.
The ACS collects information on a range of topics including language spoken at home, education, commuting, employment, mortgage status and rent, income, poverty, and health insurance coverage. According to the Census Bureau, “It is the only source of local estimates for most of the 40-plus topics it covers.”
These new estimates will be available for various geographic areas such as all states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, congressional and state legislative districts, metropolitan and micropolitan statistical areas, counties, places, census tracts, and block groups.
Embargo subscribers can access the data from January 27 at 10 a.m. ET until January 29 at 12:01 a.m. ET. During this period, wire and distribution services are not allowed to distribute embargoed news stories or data files before the embargo lifts. The Census Bureau stated: “Wire and distribution services are prohibited from distributing embargoed news stories and data files before the embargo period ends.” Further details about this policy can be found in the Census Bureau’s embargo policy.
Once released to the public on January 29 by 10 a.m. ET, all data products will be accessible through data.census.gov as well as via API and summary files.
Those interested in gaining embargo access can register through www.census.gov/newsroom/releases/archives/embargoed_releases.
