The U.S. Census Bureau has released the Business Formation Statistics (BFS) for August 2025, offering updated information on new business applications and formations across the United States. These statistics are produced monthly and provide data at national, regional, and state levels. The BFS is a standard product from the Census Bureau, developed with input from economists connected to several organizations including the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, the University of Maryland, and the University of Notre Dame.

The full dataset includes twelve different series—four related to business applications and eight to business formations—with both seasonally adjusted and nonseasonally adjusted data available.

In addition to this release, the Census Bureau has published Monthly Puerto Rico Business Applications as an experimental data product. This new set covers four monthly business application series for Puerto Rico using methodology consistent with that applied in existing BFS releases.

No formal news release accompanied this announcement; it was distributed as a tip sheet only.
