CapMetro has begun work on its Transit Plan 2035, which will guide the development of Central Texas’ transit network over the next five to ten years. The plan outlines improvements for bus, rail, and Pickup services, and is informed by data analysis, coordination with stakeholders, and feedback from more than 8,000 community members who participated in a public survey last fall.

A major feature of the plan is the introduction of Austin’s first Light Rail system. CapMetro states that this new addition will serve as an economic driver for the city and bring significant positive economic impacts.

In the initial five years before the Light Rail becomes operational, CapMetro aims to maintain current service levels while implementing cost-effective changes to increase ridership. This includes updates to Rapid Routes 800 Pleasant Valley and 837 Expo Center. Once the Light Rail opens, CapMetro plans to shift focus toward further adjustments and growth within the bus network.

The final phase of Transit Plan 2035 looks beyond 2035, addressing long-term regional transit system expansion and considering additional elements from Project Connect that were not included in earlier phases.

Community members are invited to participate in shaping local transit by attending upcoming open houses scheduled for August 26 (virtual) and August 28 at 2910 E 5th Street in Austin. Registration information is available at capmetro.org/transitplan2035. Those unable to attend can provide feedback or sign up for updates on the same website.

CapMetro’s Community Engagement team continues to develop programs aimed at increasing public involvement with local transit initiatives. More details about these efforts can be found at capmetro.org/community-engagement.
