As Austin prepares for a busy event season, local businesses are encouraged to capitalize on the opportunities these gatherings bring. Major events such as the Austin City Limits Music Festival (ACL Fest), Formula 1, the Texas Book Festival, and Texas Longhorns football are expected to draw large crowds this fall.

Events have a significant economic impact on the city. In October 2024, Austin generated over $28 million in sales tax revenue. ACL Fest alone contributed a record $538.8 million in economic activity for the area last year.

Businesses looking to benefit from these events can take several approaches. Setting clear goals and planning ahead is key. For example, bars, restaurants, and retailers near major venues often aim to increase foot traffic during event periods but must begin preparations months in advance by hiring extra staff and securing necessary permits.

Happy Chicks Chicken Kitchen (Happy Chicks), an Austin-based fried chicken restaurant with four locations, has seen notable growth by engaging with the city’s event scene. The restaurant begins food preparation three months before major events and hires additional staff one month prior.

Using multiple marketing channels can also help businesses reach potential customers. Physical signage placed along high-traffic routes like South Lamar and Barton Springs Road can attract attention from festival-goers. Audio advertising on radio and podcasts has proven effective; a recent report found that 84% of podcast listeners take action after hearing brand mentions, with nearly half making purchases as a result.

Combining in-person activations at festivals or community events with online engagement allows businesses to extend their reach and foster connections with customers beyond event days.

Associating with events offers benefits beyond increased sales. Businesses may build lasting relationships with passionate attendees who become loyal customers. Happy Chicks has hosted watch parties for local sports teams and invested in schools through academic awards and fundraising nights.

Austin’s active event calendar presents ongoing opportunities for businesses of all sizes to engage new audiences and strengthen community ties.
