Governor Greg Abbott has announced that more than $7.7 million in Funds for Veterans’ Assistance (FVA) grants have been awarded to 28 organizations serving the San Antonio and South-Central Texas region. The grants, administered by the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC), are expected to provide services to over 6,000 veterans and their families across 40 counties.

“Texas will always honor the sacrifices of veterans who courageously served our country,” said Governor Abbott. “These Fund for Veterans’ Assistance grants will provide the brave men and women who served in our nation’s military access to crucial services to help them thrive in San Antonio and South-Central Texas. Our state will never forget our veterans, their families, and their service to our state and our nation.”

“I want to sincerely thank each of our award recipients for serving our veterans,” said TVC Chairwoman and Navy veteran Laura Koerner. “Your organizations are recognized for making a difference in lives of those who served. The San Antonio area is home to many veterans including myself. It’s great to see our community giving back to those who served.”

The grant awards were presented at Meals on Wheels San Antonio by Chairwoman Koerner. Recipients include local governments, nonprofits, and service providers offering transportation, housing assistance, financial support, mental health counseling, peer support services, legal aid through treatment courts, skill-based training, food support for homeless veterans, and other resources.

Some notable awards include $350,000 each for Housing for Texas Heroes programs run by Alamo Area Council of Governments and Operation Finally Home; $500,000 each for clinical counseling provided by Family Endeavors Inc. and West Texas Counseling & Guidance; as well as multiple grants supporting transportation services and emergency financial assistance.

In May 2025, Governor Abbott announced a record-breaking $46.3 million in FVA grants distributed statewide among over 200 grants benefiting nearly 40,000 veterans or their dependents.

Since its inception in 2009 through the current 2025-2026 cycle, the FVA program has distributed more than $359 million via over 1,600 grants across Texas.

The FVA supports a broad range of services such as emergency financial aid, transportation assistance, legal support through treatment courts, family services including home modifications or rental help. Grants are awarded under five categories: General Assistance; Housing for Texas Heroes; Veterans Mental Health Grants; Veterans Treatment Courts; and Veteran County Service Officers.

Funding comes mainly from proceeds generated by special games offered by the Texas Lottery designated for veteran support programs. Additional funds are raised through voluntary donations during vehicle registration or when purchasing hunting or fishing licenses.
